【报告摘要】
Utilizing exogenous supply chain disruption caused by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, we find that foreign customers of Japanese firms with lower social commitment experience better stock market performance than those with higher social commitment. Low social commitment customers are more prone to give up Japanese suppliers after the Earthquake and to experience stronger financial performance. These effects are muted in relationships with high switching costs and societies emphasizing social norms. Our findings underscore that social commitment can impact supply chain decisions and real valuation. We also contribute to understanding how social norms align interests of stakeholders and shareholders.
